Home Inspections - Radon
Most of Florida has a low Radon potential so it is not often tested. For Sarasota and the surrounding counties the indoor level is predicted by the EPA to be less than 2 pCi/L. Only a few counties in Florida are in the middle range of 2 - 4 pCi/L. Areas in the midwest and northeast are often in the range of greater than 4 pCi/L.
We can do spot, short term (48-72 hour) testing that may be of little but some value. The next level of testing is to do longer term tests of 3 months or more. I have used the Accustar Alpha Track Test Kit AT 100 / Radon Gas Testing. You can get them at Amazon and are relatively inexpensive. You should get several and place two together and then some in separate areas to sample the house.
The next level is professional long term testing. Water, soil and home tests may be performed. The cost is much higher. Part of the problem is that levels of radon vary, so long term analysis from multiple locations are needed.
The good news is that we are in an area that is relatively low for radon. It is often people with houses up north and a vacation home here that are concerned. They have a lot of problems up north so they are naturally concerned here as well.
If you are concerned the preliminary short term test can be done. It may be of some value to you. It can be added (at no additional charge) to the indoor air quality testing that we are hired to perform. But understand that short term tests are no substitute for a long term complete analysis. |
